Professional Gardener

Specialist horticulture. Long-term stewardship. Exceptional gardens.

Big ideas, real impact.

Seventeen years of hands-on horticultural experience caring for private gardens, country homes and small estates across Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales.

I provide knowledgeable, considered garden care for clients who value exceptional plants, careful craftsmanship and the long-term development of their garden.

A garden deserves more than routine maintenance

A garden is a living landscape that changes continually with the seasons.

Good horticulture requires an understanding of plants, soils, pruning, growth, flowering and the relationships between them. My approach combines practical experience with detailed botanical knowledge to care for gardens carefully while allowing them to develop and mature over time.

I deliberately limit the number of gardens I work with so that each receives consistent, hands-on attention throughout the year.

Plants are at the heart of the garden

My approach is fundamentally plant-led.

Understanding how plants grow, compete, respond to their environment and change through the seasons allows maintenance decisions to be made with greater precision.

Rather than simply maintaining a garden in a fixed state, the aim is to understand where it is going and manage it accordingly.

Horticulture and biodiversity can work together

A cultivated garden does not have to be separate from the wider ecology of its surroundings.

Thoughtful management can provide flowering resources, shelter, structural habitat and seasonal food sources while retaining the character, beauty and refinement expected of a well-managed garden.

I take a practical approach to biodiversity, working with the existing garden, its plants, soils and surrounding landscape.

Gardens developed over time

The best gardens are rarely finished.

Plants mature, light levels change, planting relationships develop and new opportunities emerge.

For clients who want to develop their garden over many years, I provide continuity of horticultural knowledge and practical advice to help guide that process.

Nature. Refined.

A new direction in ecological garden design

Alongside my established horticultural practice, I am developing Nature. Refined.—a specialist approach to ecological garden design and engineering.

The work explores how substrate, topography, hydrology, plant communities and habitat structure can be deliberately designed to create more complex and biodiverse gardens.

About Stuart Francis

I have spent the last seventeen years working hands-on with gardens, plants and the practical realities of long-term horticultural management.

My work combines traditional horticultural skill with an ongoing interest in plant communities, ecology and the way gardens can develop over time.

I remain deliberately selective about the gardens I take on, allowing me to maintain a high level of personal involvement and attention to detail.
